A letter from a Son to Mom and Dad
I have removed the names of Son, Mom and Dad to protect privacy.
Hello mom and dad, I bet you are glad
to hear from me after these many days
Hope you are well, given the circumstances
I am well here and getting to know my ways
I’m lucky to find Mom’s nana-N-nani here
They have taken me under their wings
I am afraid, they would spoil me with love
Their love comes without attached strings
You need not worry about me up here
Bade* nana-N-nani’s security blanket
keeps me safe and secure at all times
they guard me from getting into sticky wicket
(*Bade is a Hindi word for elder; badi is the female version)
Bade nana-N-nani have erected a shield
to protect me from the ills of all ilk
I will be fine today, tomorrow & eons
Passage of time feels smooth as silk
Badi nani’s embrace reminds me of you
Her touch is as tender as a birds’ feather
Bade nana reads me worldly stories
We play card games for good measure
I will cherish the hug you gave me
The fond memory will last forever
Though we had limited time to bond
Precious are the times we had together
You are the best parents a child can ask for
Now, I want you to go on living your life
What happened, happened for no one’s fault
Life is not meant to be full of pain and strife
Bade nana-N-nani send their blessings
They wish you every happiness on Earth
They want you to become your old self
Full of verve, and laughter – kind of rebirth
That’s all for now; take care of yourself
I’d much like you to get me a brother/sister
(s)he will surely bring back joy in your life
The best gift to yourself will be a son/daughter
Bye for now.
With love, kisses, hugs and regards.
Your son.

Sadly, the newly born Son didn’t make it.
