“Guns and Roses” (Mass shooting in the US)
Warning
If you don’t like to read “politically incorrect” pieces, please quit right now.
Thank you for your understanding.
Another day, another mass shooting
Venues change, motivation may be different
Perpetrator the same – an angry white male
Radicalized on Internet, fed on hate & resentment
No public place is safe, be it a church, salon
supermarket, school, office, movie theater…
Such places cannot be fortified, or barb wired
It is not a question of if; just needs the right trigger
Reaction follows a predictable course
Local outrage, demand for stricter gun laws,
Republican silence, presidential visit
Followed by resignation when the curtain draws
By then a new shooting happens
The news and blame cycle repeats
Average citizen numbed just ignores
Politics remains the same, sanity retreats
To Republicans, talk of any gun law is anathema
To Democrats it is a losing proposition
Thanks to conservative super majority on the court,
even commonsensical gun laws are a volition
Trump normalized white supremacy
Congress doesn’t want to make changes required
Average citizen having gotten impervious to such acts
Says why bother, nothing will change, we’ve tried
But that is not true, changes are happening
Just not in the right direction, we are sliding back
Gun laws being loosened, especially in red states
In blue states these are under courts’ attack
Since mass shootings will keep happening,
let’s make it into a game* with odds and prizes
Allow Vegas to take bets on the next shooting
Ensure bets are offered to all in all sizes
(* Like sports betting. Isn’t mass Shooting a sport?)
Options are bound only by imagination
Date of attack, Perpetrator’s age, death count,
Injured count, type of gun used, shooter dead…
Fun, as the primary goal of the game, is paramount.
(We may name the game American Roulette)
It is all for a good and noble cause – to help
Money raised goes back to the community
The one that is grieving from the massacre
For them, the pain will last for the eternity
May the soul of the innocent victims rest in peace.
May the loved ones find solace.
Let’s mourn the dead with a minute of silence.
It’d be OK to sing amazing grace now.
Amen.
