Japanese Internment

I am just a name
I am just a number
I am a victim of racism
They cannot see humanity in my face

My morning was normal
Then it went downhill fast, like hot lava
Bunch of white Federal agents came to our house
Gave us measly an hour to pack up and go with them
Just enough to fill a suitcase or two

They violated my constitutional rights
I beg to ask, what’s the crime?
Did I do wrong to somebody?
They said not enough time
let’s go; I say –
What happened to due process?

Aha I get it now.  It must be my looks.
I don’t look American; I look Japanese
But I am a 2nd generation American
Borne and raised in the Golden State

I can’t change my ancestry
Neither can an American of German ancestry
Why are you not taking him?
Hitler sent millions to the gallows!

I didn’t bomb Pearl Harbor
Japanese soldiers did
Why am I being penalized?
You can’t be trusted” agent wanted to say!

We lost our home
We lost our business
We lost trust in America
We lost humanity

Holocaust museum for the Jews
Vietnam memorial for the vets
9/11 memorial for the victims
No memorial for us
No accounting for us!

Fast forward, finally a list of all those who were incarcerated for having Japanese ancestry to be unveiled on Sunday September 25, 2022 at the Japanese American museum in LA.
